Malic Acid

Malic acid is an organic compound that is the active ingredient in many sour or tart foods, most notably apples and strawberries.

What is it used for?

In dental care, malic acid is often praised as a natural tooth whitener. It helps gently lift surface stains from the enamel without the harsh abrasiveness of commercial bleaching agents. It also stimulates saliva production, which naturally washes away bacteria and food particles.

What does available evidence suggest?

While not a replacement for professional whitening, mild acids like malic acid are shown to help dissolve the pellicle layer on teeth where stains accumulate. Increased saliva flow caused by its tartness is clinically proven to supports against dry mouth and decay.

Safety considerations

Highly concentrated malic acid can erode enamel if left on teeth for long periods. In supplements, it is typically balanced in safe, low doses.
